Guigou, Paul Camille

Paul Camille Guigou was born into a wealthy family of land farmers. He studied painting in Apt and later with Émile Loubon in Marseilles. In 1851, he worked as a clerk in Apt and in 1854 he moved again to Marseilles where he was also a clerk. At the Universal Exhibition of 1855, he saw a painting by Gustave Courbet, and it had a big influence on him throughout his stay in Marseilles.

Guigou painted mostly southern Provence landscapes using oil and watercolor. In the beginning, he was influenced by Loubon, later on by the outdoor paintings of the Barbizon School and Gustave Courbet. His paintings remain representations of a quiet and tranquil Haute-Provence where he spent his summers. His landscapes are very luminous, his panoramas give an important part of the canvas to a splendid blue sky.

During his lifetime, he was not recognized and met with the indifference of both jury and public exhibitions. Battling money-related issues, he needed to give painting lessons and write reviews.

Paul Camille Guigou died young in Paris at the age of 37 from a heart stroke. After his death, he and his works were generally overlooked. The revival of interest in him began early in the twentieth century at exhibitions in Paris and Marseille. Currently, his works are now highly valued at auctions.
