Lawrence Alma-Tadema studied at the Antwerp Academy of Art and later concentrated under Baron Hendrik Leys, an artist noted for his large historical paintings. In 1863 Lawrence Alma-Tadema went to Italy, whose traditional remains, especially at Pompeii, had an awesome impact on him. Amid the time of 1862 to 1870, he became a significant contemporary European artist. His primary works were of the classical type, devoted to ancient Egypt, Greek, and Roman history.
Lawrence Alma-Tadema ended up a standout amongst the most popular and generously compensated artists of his time, recognized and remunerated by the kindred artists and also by the governments of Europe. His sort of art turned out to be exceptionally well known because the prior "Grand Tours" had touched off the creative imagination in people about the ancient civilizations. He had such success in England, that in 1870 he moved to London, and in 1871 he wedded his seventeen-year-old understudy and in 1873 he became a naturalized British subject, and joined his name, Alma, to his surname. In England, he developed a reputation for narrative paintings in the Classical style. He was knighted in 1899. After three years he went to Egypt and the effect of the Pharaonic civilization had an impact on him and affected the works of his last years.
His huge paintings brought ordinary scenes of the long-dead civilizations clearly to life through his phenomenal dominance of detail. He amassed a tremendous accumulation of ancient curios, photos, and sketches from his travels; the visual guides that empowered him to reproduce the ancient world in detail. The Finding of Moses sold for a record $36 million in 2010.
His second spouse, Laura Alma-Tadema additionally a painter, died in 1909. He had saved a plot for himself alongside her. This was not to be, with his passing in 1912, he was one one of the world's artists and the British saw it fit for him to be buried in St Paul's Cathedral.
