Brandt, Józef

Józef Brandt studied in Warsaw in the school of J.N. Leszczynski and at the Noblemen's Institute. In 1858 he left for Paris to study at the Ecole Centrale Paris but was persuaded by Juliusz Kossak to abandon engineering in favor of oil painting. He studied in Paris from 1858 to 1860.

Józef Brandt also studied as a painter in Munich under Franz Adam and Karl Piloty. From 1875 he ran his studio as an artist and teacher, becoming the leader of the so-called the Munich School of painting, with which were Aleksander Gierymski, Alfred Kowalski, Tadeusz Ajdukiewicz, Wojciech Kossak, Leon Wyczółkowski. His paintings mostly study 17th-century military life, though he has also made some studies of Polish peasant life.

He worked, for the most part, doing battle and historical paintings related to fighting Cossack, Tartar, and the Polish-Swedish wars in the seventeenth century. The work of Józef Brandt is characterized by literary scene theme, realistic details, and masterful motion. Brandt had a strong influence on Polish painting.

In 1877 Józef Brandt wedded Helena Pruszakową, the owner of the village of Orońsko, where he started and ran the art school for the better part of his life. Here he spent the summer seasons, surrounded by his family and numerous visitors and friends. Brandt's nineteenth-century manor house in Oronsko together with the surrounding park serves today as the Centre of Polish Sculpture.
