John Henry Twachtman Biography | Oil Paintings.
8-4-1853 Cincinnati, Ohio USA - 8-8-1902 Gloucester, MA USA

John Henry Twachtman received his first art training Art Academy of Cincinnati under Frank Duveneck. And Duveneck suggested he go to Germany to further his study. At the age of twenty-three he went to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1875 to 1877, and during this time along with Duveneck and William Merritt Chase, he visited Venice.
Twachtman returned to America in 1878, the following year he met and began a lifelong friendship with J. Alden Weir. In 1881, he made a wedding trip to Europe, along with Weir and his brother John on a painting expedition to Holland and Belgium.
John Henry Twachtman again returned to Europe to study at the Académie Julian in Paris from 1883 to 1885, meeting other American Impressionists Childe Hassam, Willard Metcalf, and Theodore Robinson in Paris during this time. His paintings dramatically shifted towards a soft, gray and green Tonalist style.
In 1886 he returned to America and settled in Connecticut, eventually buying a farm in Greenwich near Weir's farm. He often painted and exhibited with his friend Julian Alden Weir, and spent considerable time at the art colony in Cos Cob, and both also had a close friendship with the Danish-born painter Emil Carlsen. Ironically, his lack of commercial success contributed to his artistic independence, liberating him from the temptation of creating marketable pictures according to a proven formula.
In Greenwich, Connecticut his painting style changed once more, this time to a highly personal Impressionist technique painting many landscapes of his farm and garden, often in winter. Late in life John Henry Twachtman visited Gloucester, Massachusetts, another center of artistic activity in the late nineteenth century, and produced a series of vibrant paintings that anticipated a more modernist style yet to gain prominence in American art.
John Henry Twachtman taught painting at the Art Students League of New York from 1889 until his death in 1902 at the age of forty-nine.
