Ignacio Pinazo Camarlench Biography | Oil Painting Reproductions
1-11-1849 Valencia, ESP – 10-18, 1916 Godella, ESP
Ignacio Pinazo Camarlench came from a poor family, and from a young age, he had to help in supporting the family by practicing various trades. He had just gone to the eighth grade when his mother died of cholera, and young Ignazio was employed as a silversmith, a painter of tiles, and a decorator of fans. In 1864 enrolled in the San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts, Valencia, earning his living as a hatter.
His artistic career started when he was 21, and Ignacio Pinazo Camarlench achieved his first success in Barcelona three years later. In 1871, his work was displayed in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts for the first time. He went to Rome twice, the first time thanks to the sale of a painting. From 1876 to 1881 he lived in that city on a grant.
When Ignacio Pinazo Camarlench returned to his native city in 1874, he abandoned the conventional historic themes he had so far committed his efforts to and rather began painting family subjects, nude figures, and scenes from day-by-day life, thereby anticipating Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida and Francisco Domingo both in subject and style. This is the beginning of a more intimate, Impressionist style.
In 1884, due to a cholera epidemic in Valencia, Pinazo moved to the town of Bétera. From 1884 to 1886 he instructed at the School of Valencia. He got many many commissions from the Valencian aristocracy.
The yearly art exhibitions brought Pinazo silver medals in 1881 and 1885, gold medals in 1887 and 1899, and a royal medal. In 1912, a street in his hometown was named after him. His two sons, Ignacio and Jose, both became painters. Ignacio Pinazo Camarlench worked with dark colors as well as in the palette typical of Impressionists.
