Herbert Gustave Schmalz artistic development was relatively conventional in painting. He moved to London when he was seventeen and first studied at the South Kensington Art School and later at the Royal Academy of Arts, where he studied with Frank Dicksee, Stanhope Forbes and Arthur Hacker. After a short period perfecting his studies in Antwerp at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Schmalz returned to London and began establishing himself within the Victorian art scene.
He became friends with Frederic Leighton, marrying the sister of Dorothy Dene, a favorite model for Leighton. Herbert Schmalz made a name for himself as a history painter, with a style influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites and Orientalism. In 1884 he exhibited at the Royal Academy his painting Too Late. After a voyage to Jerusalem in 1890, he made a series of paintings with New Testament topics, with one of his best-known being Return from Calvary.
After 1895 Herbert Schmalz increasingly painted portraits. In 1900 he held a big solo exhibition named A Dream of Fair Women in the Fine Art Society. Herbert Gustave Schmalz was friends with William Holman Hunt and Valentine Prinsep. In 1918, after Germany was defeated in World War I, he changed his name to Herbert Gustave Carmichael, his grandfather was the famous maritime artist John Wilson Carmichael.
