Between 1867 and 1870 he went to Germany to take private lessons from Albert Bierstadt in the Düsseldorf Academy.

Upon his return to Cincinnati in 1870 Henry Farny came home to a to a negligibly responsive demand by the locals for his oil paintings and instead used his newly discovered abilities doing poster painting and other odd jobs.

Inspired by the newly developing market for American Indian and American Western art paintings, Farny traveled up the Missouri River in 1881, making sketches, and taking photos for use in his studio. On several more trips West he did the same until his Cincinnati studio was full of material for almost any Indian subject he wished to paint.
