Martin, Henri Jean Guillaume

Henri-Jean Guillaume Martin was persuasive enough to convince his father to allow him to become an artist, and at the age of seventeen in 1877, he entered the Toulouse School of the Fine Arts and studied under Jules Garipuy. Two years later, Henri-Jean Guillaume Martin moved to Paris to study in the studio of Jean-Paul Laurens with the help of a scholarship.

He held his first exhibition in 1886 at the Paris Salon, and the following year he won his first medal, and a scholarship for an art tour in Italy, where he studied the works of Giotto di Bondone and Masaccio. His 1889 oil painting submission to the Salon earned him the gold medal for a work that has been described as Pointillist. That same year he became a member of the Legion of Honor. At the 1900 World Fair, he was awarded the Grand Prize for his work and became friends with Auguste Rodin.

Henri-Jean Guillaume Martin's works as a Post-Impressionist although well-received are not considered groundbreaking, his work as a Symbolist painter, the likes of Puvis de Chavannes, is world class.

Due to his introverted demeanor, Henri-Jean Guillaume Martin chose to move far from Paris. After a decade of searching for a perfect home, Martin bought a mansion overlooking La Bastide du Vert, near Cahors. He painted his best work in his new tranquil environment and died there in 1943.
