Gerrit Adriaensz Berckheyde was the more youthful sibling by eleven years and understudy of the painter Job Adriaenszoon Berckheyde. Gerrit thusly gained from his more seasoned sibling. Job's instructor more likely than not was Frans Hals.

During the 1650s the two siblings made an extended outing along the Rhine to Germany, stopping off at Cologne, Bonn, Mannheim lastly Heidelberg. The brothers worked in Heidelberg for Charles I Louis, where they were both awarded a gold medal for their endeavors, however, they were eventually not able to adjust to court life thus returned to Haarlem, where they shared a house and studio. Gerrit Adriaensz Berckheyde became a member of the Haarlem Guild of Saint Luke on 27 July 1660.

As indicated by the RKD he was a painter known for his Italianate landscapes in addition to portrait pictures and cavalry pieces. His style incorporates Pieter Saenredam's style for church interiors, refined draftsmanship and an impartial state of mind, to put it plainly, the characteristics of "Dutch Classicism", much the same as Vermeer. Gerrit Adriaensz Berckheyde favored views of landmarks on huge open squares, as opposed to surrendering clearness for pictorial impact by painting views along canals, as the other extraordinary Dutch cityscape painter, Jan van der Heyden did.
