Lemmen, Georges

Georges Lemmen liked drawing at a young age, and being the son of an architect, his father encouraged him with his drawings and art and enrolled him in the local art school, but Lemmen became bored with the teaching methods and dropped out of school.

In the early 1880s, he was influenced by Edgar Degas and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, but the pointillist style of Georges Seurat had the most influence on him, Georges Lemmen started painting in a pointillist style. In 1885 at the age of twenty, he showed his work at a few different galleries in Brussels and in Ghent. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris and in 1888 Lemmen joined the avant-garde art group Les XX (The 20).

In 1890-1893, under the influence of Théo van Rysselberghe, he moved towards Post-Impressionism and painted numerous landscapes and portraits using the technique. But, after 1895, four years after the passing of Seurat, Lemmen abandoned Pointillism. The passing of Seurat in 1891 affected every one of the painters of the Neo-Impressionist. He switched and began following the style of Art Nouveau for his many book illustrations, ceramics, carpets, and posters, but his oil paintings were painted in a more traditional, Impressionist style.
