Sir George Clausen RA English artist working in oil and watercolor, etching, mezzotint, and drypoint. His work was influenced by French Plein-air painting. He was especially intrigued by the impacts of light, frequently showing figures set against the sun, but he always retained a solidity of form.
George Clausen father of Danish descent was a decorative painter. From 1867 to 1873, he attended the South Kensington Schools in London. He then worked in the art studio of Edwin Long, and then went to Paris to study under Bouguereau and Robert-Fleury. He was an admirer of the naturalism of the painter Jules Bastien-Lepage; about whom he wrote articles in 1888 and 1892.
George Clausen ended up one of the preeminent painters of his day of landscape and of peasant life, influenced to a degree by the Impressionists movement, he shared their view that way light is painted is the real subject matter of landscape art. His pictures excel in rendering the presence of things under flickering outside daylight, or in the shady shelter of a barn or stable.
From the 1890s he built up this procedure through to its very own style, with influences of Impressionism mixed with Luminism, in its accentuation on the atmospheric light. He worked with a square brush and dry paints, made for a pastel-like appearance.
In 1895 George Clausen was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy, and a full Academician in 1906 and later became a Professor of Painting. Clausen was an official war artist during World War I and was knighted in 1927.
