2-15-1817 Paris, FRA - 2-19-1878 Paris, FRA
Charles-François Daubigny was born into a family of painters and educated in the arts by both Edmond François Daubigny his father and Pierre Daubigny his uncle, both painters.
Daubigny painted in a traditional style, but this changed after 1843 when he settled in Barbizon to work outdoors in the natural environment. Much more vital was his meeting with Camille Corot in 1852 in Optevoz. On his famous boat studio Botin, he painted along the Seine and Oise rivers, often in the district around Auvers. From 1852 onward he came under the influence of Gustave Courbet, directing his art towards a realistic direction.
In 1866 Charles-François Daubigny visited England and returned there for safe haven because of the Franco-Prussian war in 1870. In London, he met Claude Monet, and they left together for a trip to the Netherlands. Back in Auvers, he met Paul Cézanne, another major Impressionist artist. Daubigny influenced these younger painters with his style and techniques.
Charles-François Daubigny's best artworks were painted between 1864 and 1874, these generally comprise of finished landscapes with trees, river, and ducks, when Daubigny liked his painting he included another duck or two, the number of ducks often indicated whether he thought his painting is worthy or not. Daubigny is remembered for his riverside oil paintings, of which he painted a great number, yet despite the fact that there are two huge landscapes by Daubigny in the Louvre, they are not a river view, not are there any ducks.
