Blechen, Carl

Carl Ferdinand Blechen went to the Lyceum at the Oberkirche St.Nikolai in Cottbus in Germany from 1805 to 1815, but his folks couldn't pay for any further instruction at the school, so they apprenticed him to a banker and he was occupied with that calling until 1822 when enthusiasm for art drove him to go to the Berlin Art Academy.

After a short trek to Dresden and Saxon in Switzerland, Carl Ferdinand Blechen came back to Berlin and acquired a position as a decorator for the Royal Theater on the Alexanderplatz. He wedded in 1824 and became a member of the Berlin Artists' Association in 1827. Soon thereafter, he was let go from the Theater due to a progressing dispute with the singer Henriette Sontag. From that point forward, he attempted to support himself as an independent artist. In 1828, he took a study outing to the Baltic Sea, then an excursion to Italy which produced hundreds of sketches that were later expounded in his Berlin studio. He had been profoundly awed by the scenes there and changed his whole way of painting to reflect what he had seen romantically.

Carl Ferdinand Blechen, A Crazy Artist.

In 1831, upon the suggestion of Carl Schinkel, Blechen was designated Professor of Landscape Painting at the Berlin Art Academy. In 1835 he became a full member of the Academy and took a study excursion to Paris. It was then that the first indications of his emotional sickness showed up.

His condition crumbled and he endured serious episodes of depression that forced him to take a leave of absence from the Academy in 1836. The next year, he was admitted to a hospital at the young age of only thirty-eight. He died four years later, totally mentally deranged.

Carl Ferdinand Blechen was one of the first European painters to paint early industrialization as a major aspect of his landscapes.
