Bartholomeus van Hove taught art by his father, Hubertus van Hove the Elder and the theater painter JHAA Breckenheijmer. In 1820 he was appointed to headteacher and headmaster of the Hague Academy Teeken and was the teacher of many students including, among others, Carel Jacobus Behr, Johannes Bosboom, Herman Gijsbert Keppel Hesselink, Everhardus Koster, Charles Leickert, Willem Troost, Salomon Verveer, and Jan Hendrik Weissenbruch. He played an important role in the development of nineteenth-century painting by his many students.
In 1823 he was commissioned by the Ministry of War for a series of washed pen drawings of the different uniforms worn in the Dutch army. Besides being a painter, Bartholomeus Johannes van Hove was also a decorator, and in 1829 he followed his teacher John Breckenheijmer as a scene painter at the Hague Theatre. This branch of painting would give him the most recognition during his lifetime.
Apart from stage sets Bartholomeus van Hove painted Romantic-style cityscapes and church interiors. His early works are characterized by a fine, detailed painting style, which contrasts with the looser painting style for stage sets. His cityscapes and church interiors often have figures, some of which were done by his son Huib.
Bartholomeus van Hove, in 1847 was one of the founders of Pulchri Studio and was also the first president of the painters' society, a position he held until 1851. He was a member of the Amsterdam-based Arti et Amicitiae and its honorary president in 1874.
A remarkable work of Bartholomeus van Hove is on moiré painted coat of arms of the Kingdom of the Netherlands painted on the state standard. done in 1840, which has since been used in all inauguration ceremonies.
