Fisher, Alvan

Alvan Fisher decided with the help of his family at the age of eighteen, to become an artist and started an apprenticeship with John Ritto Penniman in Boston, along with other young artists Charles Codman.

In 1815, at the age of twenty-two, he began his professional career, opening an art studio on School Street in Boston. During his first ten years as a painter, he developed his style for the rest of his career. The growing popularity of landscape and genre painting coincided with the growing middle-class population of the United States.

Alvan Fisher would sketch outdoors and then finish the landscapes in his studio before Thomas Cole, Thomas Doughty, Asher B. Durand, or others of the Hudson River School gave serious attention to painting from nature. Even though Fisher has nothing to do with nor is included in the Hudson River School, his art can be viewed as pre-Hudson River School, in its early style, and even painting some of the same scenery.

In April 1825, Alvan Fisher sailed for a tour of the great art centers of Europe. He was the first important American landscape artist to make such a tour. He visited England, France, Italy, and Switzerland, countries considered important for any artist's professional stature and artistic development. In London, he visited private collections and was inspired by the composition and subject matter of landscapes by Claude Lorrain. In Paris, he studied drawing and made reproductions of works by the Old Masters at the Louvre.

After his return from Europe in late 1826, Alvan Fisher's mature career began. He re-opened a studio in Boston and he was the first landscape artist to hang out a professional sign on his shop. He had amassed huge riches from his artistry and also from his business acumen. He and his brothers had invested in land in Maine and he had also accumulated stocks in textile mills, copper mines, and the new expanding railroads.

The greatest recognition of his skill as a landscape artist came one hundred years later when First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy picked his painting, The Remnant of the Tribe, to hang in the Green Room of the White House.
