Bloemaert, Abraham

Abraham Bloemaert, the child of the architect Cornelis Bloemaert I, moved his family to Utrecht in 1575, where Abraham was initially an understudy of Gerrit Splinter and of Joos de Beer. From the age of 15, he then spent three years in Paris from 1581–1583, studying for a month and a half under Jehan Bassot and afterward under Maistre Herry. While in the School of Fontainebleau he got further training from his countryman Hieronymus Francken. He came back to Utrecht in 1583, just before the French Wars of Religion started, which obliterated a significant part of the work at the Chateau of Fontainebleau.

At the point when his dad was appointed city engineer in Amsterdam in 1591 he went with him there, and on his dad's death in 1593 returned at long last to Utrecht, where he set up a workshop and became dean of the Utrecht Guild of St. Luke in 1594. In 1611, alongside Paulus Moreelse, he was one of the founders of another Utrecht painters' society, called "St. Lucas-gilde". Many of Abraham Bloemaert artistic creations were commissioned by Utrecht's clandestine Catholic churches.

Abraham Bloemaert was better as a colorist than as a designer, was extremely productive, and painted and etched historical and allegorical pictures, landscapes, still-life, animal pictures, and flower pieces. In the first decade of the seventeenth century, Bloemaert started defining his landscape scene to incorporate picturesque ruined cottages and other pastoral components. In these works, the religious or legendary figures assume a subordinate part. Country life was to remain Bloemaert's most loved subject, which he portrayed with expanding naturalism. He drew themes, for example, peasant cottages, dovecotes, and trees from life, and afterward on his arrival to the studio worked them up into complex fanciful scenes.

Among his numerous students were his four children, Hendrick, Frederick, Cornelis, and Adriaan every one of whom accomplished an impressive reputation as painters or etchers.
